From the time the first Africans arrived in North Carolina until the present day, music has been an always-present element. Music is the universal language and Phoenix Fest celebrates the diverse musical traditions present in Durham's African American community from the high-stepping band tradition in the opening parade to gospel, R&B, reggae, blues, hip hop and jazz.
All-day music starts on Center Stage immediately after the parade ends. We invite you to grab a seat under the big tent or bring your lawn chairs and sit a while to savor our community's rich talent, both known and unknown, all around us.
